As is always the case, Netflix has a loaded slate of movies set to hit the platform in 2022. The streaming juggernaut looks to continue its stranglehold as the most subscribed-to service around the world and their upcoming original films have a good chance of helping them achieve that goal.
It’s difficult to fully narrow down which ones are the most exciting to look forward to since there are so many lined up. They feature some of the most talented and impressive names in Hollywood from blockbuster actors to award-winning writers and directors. There’s even a highly anticipated sequel or two on the way.
Fistful Of Vengeance (February 17)
It can be a blast to see a film that acts as a continuation of a popular TV series and Fistful of Vengeance is set to do just that. The martial-arts action thriller depicts what happens after the end of season 1 of Netflix’s Wu Assassins show.
The idea behind the film is that the Wu Assassins team reunites after the death of one of their own, only to discover that their enemies have new supernatural powers. Not much else is known but the film is set to arrive in mid-February and fans of the show are likely to be completely engrossed in this.
The Adam Project (March 11)
Sometimes, audiences don’t need to know about the plot of a movie to be excited. They just need to see the actors involved and there’s no doubt that the upcoming The Adam Project is packed to the brim with star power.
Ryan Reynolds, Zoe Saldana, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, and more are part of this film’s cast and that’s enough to get plenty of people to buy into it. So far, all that’s known about the plot is that it sees a man (Reynolds) travel back in time to confront his late father.
The Gray Man (July)
In 2021, Red Notice was a huge success for Netflix thanks to fun action and a cast filled with top stars. With that came a huge budget but apparently, that film’s $200 million is to be surpassed by The Gray Man, which is reportedly the most expensive movie ever made by Netflix.
This action thriller is directed by The Russo Brothers, who were behind Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The Gray Man sees a CIA mercenary (Ryan Gosling) uncover secrets and get hunted by an unhinged former partner (Chris Evans). Throw in Ana de Armas, Billy Bob Thornton, and Jessica Henwick and it sounds like a recipe for success.
Pinocchio (December)
Every once in a while, multiple movies come out in the same year with similar concepts. 2022 will take that to the next level with two films arriving that are both about the famous 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio. Disney will release one starring Tom Hanks but Netflix is taking a more unexpected route.
Their Pinocchio is from the mind of Guillermo Del Toro, who is known for putting out some of the most creative and unique films in recent memory. This is meant to be a twisted retelling of the classic tale. The stop-motion film is slated for a December release and the likes of Ewan McGregor and Cate Blanchett will voice characters.
Persuasion (TBD)
One of the writers who has their work adapted to the screen more than any other is Jane Austen. It seems like every year features a new movie or TV version of one of her works and 2022 is no different as Persuasion is coming to Netflix.
The novel is Austen’s final published work, released just after her death. The story itself is strong enough to make it an anticipated film but the fantastic cast led by Dakota Johnson and Henry Golding only adds to why it’ll likely be watched by millions when it arrives.
White Noise (TBD)
Not to be confused with the 2005 movie of the same name, this White Noise is set to be something totally different. The story centers on a professor of Hitler studies and how his life changes drastically following a train accident that causes chemical waste to cover his town.
Regardless of your thoughts on the premise itself, the people behind this movie are the biggest reason to get excited. Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach is directing, and writing, while fellow Oscar nominees Greta Gerwig and Adam Driver are leading the cast.
You People (TBD)
There are some cases where a movie is just filled with some of the funniest actors to ever grace the big screen and it’s enough to bring audiences flocking to it. You People feels like it could be one of those as it features Eddie Murphy, Jonah Hill, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Those are some heavy hitters who will be joined by Mike Epps, Rhea Perlman, and so many others. The film (which was co-written by Hill) is set to focus on a new couple and their families, showcasing clashing cultures and generations. With so much talent involved, it’s bound to be a hit.
Spiderhead (TBD)
One of the biggest recent hits for Netflix was Extraction (which has a sequel in development) and that was led by Chris Hemsworth. In 2022, he’ll be at the forefront of another film that could become a big deal on Netflix in Spiderhead.
The film is based on a dystopian short by George Saunders and it tells the story of inmates at a prison where you can reduce sentence time by taking part in experiments involving emotion-altering drugs. Hemsworth is playing the prison supervisor, while Miles Teller and Jurnee Smollett portray the inmates at the heart of the tale.
Blonde (TBD)
Ana de Armas has quickly carved out a name for herself in Hollywood. With scene-stealing supporting performances in Blade Runner 2049 and Hands of Stone setting the stage for her best work in Knives Out, de Armas has started to pop up everywhere and rightfully so.
Her biggest role is likely coming up in Blonde where she will take on the iconic part of Marilyn Monroe in a film that tells a fictionalized version of the icon’s life. That’s enough to get folks excited but the addition of Brad Pitt as a producer and Adrien Brody and Bobby Cannavale in the cast doesn’t hurt.
Knives Out 2 (Late 2022)
Netflix struck a mega-deal when they outbid several studios for the sequels to 2019’s mystery hit Knives Out. Rian Johnson will again write and direct the film, which is set to return Daniel Craig as Detective Benoit Blanc. The well-received first film had audiences clamoring for a sequel.
However, the news of the casting for Knives Out 2 has only added to the excitement. While the plot isn’t known yet, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson, Edward Norton, Madelyn Cline, Jessica Henwick, Leslie Odom Jr., and Ethan Hawke make up for one of the most impressive casts ever.
