February 10, 2022 – Liberals in Newmarket—Aurora have nominated Dr. Sylvain Roy, a neuropsychologist and a mental health and disability advocate, as their Ontario Liberal Party (OLP) candidate for the next provincial election.
“Sylvain has dedicated his career to helping people and creating a fairer and more inclusive Ontario,” said OLP Leader, Steven Del Duca. “Sylvain truly understands what it takes to be a fantastic representative for his community, and with him as their MPP, the people of Newmarket—Aurora will have a strong fighter on their side at Queen’s Park.”
As a neuropsychologist, Dr. Sylvain Roy is a vocal advocate for persons with disabilities, those experiencing poverty and homelessness, and persons with mental health and addiction challenges. For many years, Dr. Roy was the lead clinician at CAMH’s Psychosocial Rehabilitation Service, and currently works at the Inner City Family Health Team.
Dr. Roy is also co-lead of the City of Toronto’s Mental Health Support Strategy and believes we can and must do more to address the social determinants of health. As the former president of the Ontario Psychological Association, Dr. Roy sat on the Government’s Opioid Emergency Task Force, the ODSP adjudication working group as well as the Structured Psychotherapy Advisory Panel.
“I am excited to be the Liberal candidate for Newmarket-Aurora,” said Dr. Roy. “Residents consistently tell me our riding is not properly represented at Queen’s Park and I promise to change that. People are concerned about mental health, climate change, affordable housing, education and so much more. I will work closely with our leader, Steven Del Duca, to find the right solutions.”
