The blaze northwest of Los Angeles injured several firefighters, one seriously, destroyed 10 homes and burned down a condor sanctuary.
Roman Josi had three assists and the Nashville Predators erased a one-goal deficit in the third period to defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-2. Ryan Johansen scored on the power play at 12:38 of the third period but it came with some controversy. Josi’s point shot appeared to be knocked down by a high stick from Matt Duchesne before Johansen tapped the puck in. The play was reviewed, but the goal stood to give the Predators the lead. Duchesne and Tanner Jeannot had Nashville’s other goals and Juuse Saros made 28 saves. Mathieu Joseph and Josh Norris scored for the Senators, whose three-game winning streak ended. Anton Forsberg made 31 saves.

Milwaukee withstood a triple-double from Jaylen Brown, who had 22 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds for the Celtics. Brown’s 11 assists matched his career high. Marcus Smart shot 7 of 12 from 3-point range and was the Celtics’ leading scorer with a season-high 29 points.
Alabama lawmakers have approved legislation aimed at resisting a half-dozen executive actions by President Joe Biden to combat gun violence. The Alabama House of Representatives voted 68-28 on Thurdsay for legislation. It now goes to Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey for her consideration. The measure is part of red state efforts to take up both tangible and symbolic resistance to federal gun control measures. The approval came over the objections of Democrats who derided the measure as unconstitutional and election-year pandering. The legislation would prohibit state officials from helping to administer or enforce any presidential executive order that “restricts the ownership, use, or possession of firearms, ammunition, or firearm accessories.”

According to Human Rights Watch, the killings in Moura were the worst single atrocity reported in Mali’s 10-year armed conflict against Islamic extremists. Britain and France alleged at a U.N. Security Council meeting Thursday that Russian mercenaries from the Kremlin-linked Wagner Group were involved.

Alabama lawmakers have approved legislation to restrict the use of good behavior incentives to shorten prison sentences. The bill was put forward in reaction to the slaying of a north Alabama police officer. State senators voted 28-0 on Thursday for the bill, which seeks to prohibit anyone convicted of manslaughter from qualifying for “good time” incentives. It now goes to Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey for her consideration. The bill is called the Sergeant Nick Risner Act. It is named after the 40-year-old Sheffield police officer who was killed while pursuing a suspect last year. Risner’s family watched from the Senate gallery as lawmakers voted on the bill.

Byron outdueled Johnny Sauter and Kyle Busch down the stretch for his eighth career victory in the series — with seven coming in a dominating 2016 season. Sauter was second, trailing Byron by 1.138 seconds, for his 11th career top-five finish at Martinsville. Busch finished third in the third of his five series races this season. John Hunter Nemechek was fourth and Truck Series champion Ben Rhodes fifth after taking Stage 2.
CJ McCollum scored 23 points in 29 minutes against his former team, and the New Orleans Pelicans moved closer to clinching a home play-in game with a 127-94 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Jonas Valanciunas, who returned from a sore right ankle, scored 14 points in 21 minutes for the Pelicans, who were without leading scorer Brandon Ingram because of his tight right hamstring. But the Pelicans wound up not needing any of their starters on the floor for as many as 30 minutes against a reeling Blazers team that had a patchwork lineup and lost its ninth straight. Drew Eubanks led Portland with 20 points.

Alabama lawmakers have voted to prohibit election officials from accepting private donations and grants to help fund election-related expenses like voter registration and outreach. The Alabama Senate approved the bill on a 25-7 vote Thursday. Republicans were in support of the measure and Democrats opposed. The bill now goes to Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey for her consideration. While Republicans argued that the measure is needed to protect election integrity, opponents say it would hinder election administration in poor counties and have a chilling effect on efforts to help people register and vote. Republicans in at least eight GOP-controlled states have passed bans on donations to election offices this year.
