After having several strong performances at the Runners Roost of Fort Collins Invitational last week, the Summit High School Tigers track and field team traveled to Erie to compete in the Erie Twilight Invitational on Friday, April 1.

One week after freshman distance runner Ella Hagen broke the 18-year-old school record in the 1600-meter run, another long-standing Summit school record is now under new ownership.

The 4×100-meter relay team composed of Liam Dalzell, Jack Schierholz, Aidan Collins and River McClung broke the 31-year-old record by sprinting to the finish line, registering a time of 45.25 seconds.

At the beginning of track season Dalzell, Schierholz and Collins made it very clear that the record from 1991 would not be safe much longer since the trio had been working toward beating the record since last track season.

“It feels great,” Collins said in a text. “Truly an accomplishment we had been looking for this entire offseason. Glad I was able to be a part of such a great accomplishment.”

Collins gave a shoutout to his junior teammate, Schierholz, who was able to chase down the record on the anchor leg of the relay, putting his quarterback speed on full display.

The relay team ended up placing seventh overall. Holy Family placed first in a time of 42.14 seconds.

In the distance events Ella Hagen and Dom Remeikis once again reigned supreme for the Tigers. Hagen placed first in the girls 3200-meter run while Remeikis placed second in the boys 3200-meter run.

Hagen ran in a league of her own as she beat the competition by over 41 seconds, finishing with a time of 11:12.25 for one of the top times at the distance in the 4A state classification.

Remeikis ran 9:51.03 during his second-place run. He was outmatched by Bryce Reeburgh of Golden High School who ran 9:39.37.

In the girls 1600-meter run, Adaline Avery and Cecelia Miner registered solid races. The duo placed 43rd and 51st, respectively. Avery had the fastest time on the day for the Tigers’ 1600-meter competitors, edging closer to the 6-minute mile barrier with her time of 6:17.12.

Senior Emily Koetteritz rounded out the impressive performances for the Tigers with a seventh place finish in the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.42 seconds. Koetteritz also competed in the girls triple jump where she placed 17th with a top jump of 29.5 inches.

The Tigers will have a short turnaround as the team is scheduled to compete at the rescheduled Columbine Invitational on Tuesday, April 5, and then the D’Evelyn Invitational on Saturday, April 9, where the team is expected to face competitive Front Range teams. Both meets will take place at Jefferson County Stadium in Denver.
